'The training at ¹û½´ÊÓƵ goes above and beyond, teaching modern techniques on state-of-the-arts tools and equipment.'

Q: Why did you choose a career in Collision Repair?

A: I’ve grown up around the industry, my father’s been a technician for 30 years but has worked for Craftsman for over 20 years. My uncle also has 20+ years experience as an automotive painter and now works as a Red Seal Automotive Collision Technician for Craftsman as well.

Q: How did your training with ¹û½´ÊÓƵ help prepare you for your current role? What is your current position?

A: Currently, I am working as a Level 2 Collision Repair Technician. This summer, I will be returning to ¹û½´ÊÓƵ to complete my Level 3 technical training. The training at ¹û½´ÊÓƵ goes above and beyond, teaching modern techniques on state-of-the-arts tools and equipment. Some technicians and shops still use old school equipment so it’s great that I’ve been able to use the skills I learned at ¹û½´ÊÓƵ to suggest new ways of doing something or a new tool that could make the job more efficient.

Q: What is something you learned in the Collision Repair program that has helped you in your career today?

A: I would say, working with metal. In the entry-level training program, I learned different ways that metal moves and how to shape it correctly. There is a lot to consider with making a repair on metal (cutting applications, welding techniques, distribution of heat, etc.). I have learned that most shops expect you to know how to do metal working as it’s a large portion of the business.

Q: What are your career goals?

A: My first goal is to complete the I-CAR courses. These professional development courses help current collision repair technicians maintain high levels of role-relevant training.   I’m excited because I’m close to being done it! My long-term goal is to be Red Seal certified and working in a specialty shop or high-performance shop.

Q: What is your favourite part of your job?

A: I really enjoy the troubleshooting aspect of the job. We have to figure out how to make aftermarket pieces work and the problem solving is great.

Q: What is the benefit of an apprenticeship or working while you learn?

A: It’s the help that you get from experienced Red Seal journeypeople. If you don’t know how to do something, they’ll help you figure it out. Overall, the people I have worked with so far have really helped me learn. No matter what I’m asking about, they’re there to help.
